Demopolis, rated fifth in the Top Ten Small
Towns in America, is in Marengo County in west central Alabama
in what is known
as the Black Belt Region and Upper Coastal Plain Area. It is at the confluence
of the Tombigbee - Black Warrior rivers and is within the geographic triangle
formed by Tuscaloosa to the
north, Mobile to the south and Montgomery to the
east.
It is served by U.S. Highways 43 and 80, about 21 miles to Greensboro,
550+ miles to Houston, TX.
Originally an area devoted to agriculture,
Demopolis now has many industries such as Borden Chemical Co., Cemex Cement,
Gulf States Paper Corp., New Era Cap Company, and Foster Farms. There are also a
number of other industries and large employers.
Each holiday season begins with a week of
special activities called "Christmas on the River." This annual Demopolis
tradition is climaxed by a nighttime parade that is watched by crowds from the
bluff above the Tombigbee River. A spectacular display of fireworks |
|
lights up the sky above a majestic
procession
of brightly lighted and brilliantly decorated floats. It's
an extravaganza that is eagerly awaited
each year.
